Ateva® EVA COPOLYMERS Medical Applications
Medical Applications - Ateva® EVA copolymers with 7% to 15% VA content are used extensively for the production of corrugated hose for medical applications. Uses range from disposable hose for anesthesia purposes to ventilator hose for assisted breathing over longer periods.
Hose is usually made by an extrusion blow-molding process where an extruded molten tube passes through a corrugator, continuously forming shape by pressure or vacuum. hose.gif (12633 bytes)

Ateva® is particularly suited for these applications due to its soft feel and draping characteristics, which improve with higher vinyl acetate content. Also, ease of fabrication, lack of migratory plasticizers, low toxicity, and no restrictions on incineration of EVA hospital waste lend to the increasing use of EVA in medical applications.

AT Plastics offers full regulatory support of our products. Many grades of our Ateva® EVA copolymers are listed in FDA Device/Drug Master Files and are accessible by our customers to aid in product developments.

Ateva® EVA COPOLYMERS Cap Liner Applications
Cap Liner Applications - Ateva® EVA copolymers with 9% to 18% VA and 3 to 10 MI are used in liners for metal or plastic caps of PET bottles containing water or carbonated drinks. Our customers compound Ateva® with proprietary ingredients for these applications. The compound is either extruded into sheeting and the liners stamped, or the liners are compression molded in-situ.

In this application it is critical that the polymer have low extractables, contributing to desirable organoleptic properties. AT Plastics has tested its polymers to ensure they are acceptable for food contact applications and meet the requirements of FDA regulation 21 CFR 177.1350.

Ateva® EVA COPOLYMERS Automotive Applications
Automotive Applications - Ateva® EVA and LDPE polymers are finding increased use in the automotive applications in carpet backing and noise reduction.

Ateva® EVA and LDPE polymers are used to precoat the back of carpets to lock the fiber tufts to the scrim. For this application, usually high MI EVA (VA content of 18%) or LDPE polymers are chosen, with good balance between the adhesive and cohesive strength of the polymer. To improve wear, a higher MI helps penetration of the melt through the carpet fibers, and higher adhesion is achieved by increased VA content.

Heavily filled flexible compositions have been found to be very useful in dampening vibration and absorbing sound. EVA polymers, with their ability to accept up to 80% by weight of fillers, have found successful application in this area. The two types of material are massback and sound deadening.

Massback is the term applied to a highly filled EVA which is applied beneath the automotive carpet, and in some cases, directly extruded onto the precoat. The massback layer is used as a sound barrier between the engine and the passenger compartment. The requirements of the filled compounds are sound deadening properties, thermoformability, and good flexibility over a wide temperature range. High VA content EVA is an ideal base resin for this application since its polarity allows good compatibility with high levels of filler. Similar compositions are also made into smaller-sized individual sound deadening components.

These are strategically placed in high noise areas of an automobile including fender wells, inside doors, or under the dashboard. Furthermore, an absence of plasticizers helps to prevent window fogging.

Gasketing is another automotive application for Ateva® EVA copolymers. EVA is a component of crosslinked compounds and foams which are starting to find increasing use due to their rubbery nature and heat and ozone resistance.

Ateva® EVA COPOLYMERS Hose and Tubing Applications

Hose, Tubing, Pipe & Profile Extrusion Applications - Ateva® EVA copolymers are also found in hose and tubing for beverages and agricultural fertilizer, applications that require hose flexibility over a wide range of temperatures. EVA grades with 9% to 12% VA content are typically used and extruded through annular dies into sizing rings in vacuum tanks. EVA grades with 7% to 12% EVA are used for spiral-wound vacuum and swimming pool hose. The spiral-wound method produces a hose with superior flex-life and crush resistance. Chemical and environmental stress-crack resistance are critical, as is low toxicity.
